How would Turo work for a 20 year old?

I might find myself going to North Carolina soon, and I wondered if I could rent a car using turo; if any of you have an experience with the app, specially if you’re a young driver, it would be great to know!

Kinja'd!!!

My family probably would skip on renting a car and I wanted to go visit a friend of mine that lives in Virginia one of the days, which means I’d be driving and the legacy rentals wouldn’t allow me to drive until... 25?

No issue for me at 22. Some people specifically mention an age cutoff (usually 27 or 28 I believe) but you can either skip those particular listings, or call the owner of the car and convince them that you’re responsible, and won’t end up in a ditch

Yeah.... I mean... I have driven for half a decade and in many countries; never had a traffic accident... plus, there isn’t much snow in those parts, is there?

We’re going to a furniture show... and I’d have to drive around 600 miles; mostly in the interstate.

It gets icy at some parts. Beech mountain in particular

I mean, my license would let them know rather clearly that I am 20....
I did sign up with my real age and it didn’t like, ban me.

Ah shit.... I’ve driven in icy weather before but I would understand if the owner of the car decided that they wouldn’t risk it.

You’re from Mexico, though. The foreign license might be more of an issue than the age.

But I’ve never rented a car, let alone renting a car in another country.

I signed up at 21 back when they were still RelayRides. They actually accepted my driving record from Colombia and it was smooth sailing! Rented an E46 3-series for most of my senior year. They were a much scrappier startup back then, though.

Once you try actually doing a booking they’ll ask for everything they need afaik. So you should try that and get approved. Then you can cancel.

It’s just in the mountainous areas. If you’re driving to Virginia you’ll be fine

Unofficially? Have your parents make the account & rent the car, then they hand it over to you. If you use your account to refer them to start an account you’ll also get $25 off.

Well, it’s never an issue for most Mexicans I know.

I guess I could play it safe and get one of those “International Driver’s license” thing, but I’ve driven in many countries and it isn’t an issue ever..

I don’t flaunt my age, but think what was I doing at 20 years old. And what was I driving.

Probably the 1990 Suburban. And I bought my first Jeep.

Yeah... plus since it’s only one full day that I need the car, I might just rent a nicer car, or at least more interesting.

I’ve driven in the US before because my mom is a lousy driver in the highway (very sleepy) with a rental car... knowing she’s there in the car would give me “plausible deniability” so to say.

But I’d be alone for 600 miles....

Highpoint I’m guessing? I’m near that area quite a bit. Let me know if you end up with a bunch of extra time maybe there will be an impromptu Oppo luncheon

Do you have US citizenship? I know turo is super picky about who they approve for renting. I wonder if that’s one of their “hidden” requirements. Most rentals on Turo do also have a 25 age requirement and some are 30. Although there are a few with no restrictions, but it will definitely be harder to find. If you log in with an account listed as an age less than 25, it will filter out stuff I think.

Just FYI if you do manage to rent a car Turo charges an additional 20% on top of the daily rental fee for drivers under 25. Not a huge deal but just something to be aware of.

Fox will rent to you as long as you have a credit card. You might need an international driver’s permit depending on who you deal with on your travels (assuming you’re using a Mexican license)

I’m thinking more like an encounter with a dickhead cop. Fox probably wants to take your money.
Also using a travel site to book (like Expedia) I find it’s usually a lot cheaper. Buy the 10 dollar a day insurance through them too, it’s cheaper than what they’ll sell you at the rental place.

I’m not sure how turo works. I know I have friends who have been denied membership which was weird. I’m guessing it was their driving records or something though.
